Academic Essay Writing
Introduction(導入)
├─ Hook(読者の関心を引く一文)
├─ Background(背景・文脈)
└─ Thesis statement(主張=この論文の核)
Body Paragraph 1
├─ Topic sentence(段落の主張)
├─ Evidence(証拠・データ・引用)
├─ Analysis(証拠の解釈)
└─ Link(次の段落への橋渡し)
Body Paragraph 2, 3...(同じ構造)
Conclusion(結論)
├─ Restate thesis(主張の言い換え)
├─ Synthesize(各論点の総合)
└─ Implications(含意・今後の展望)
There are many opinions about remote work. Some say it's good, some say it's bad. In this essay I will explore this topic."
While remote work poses challenges for collaboration, its benefits for productivity and employee well-being make it a net positive for most knowledge-based industries."
- Evidence — 証拠
- Explanation —
Point: Social media has fundamentally altered political discourse. Evidence: A 2021 Pew study found that 48% of U.S. adults get news primarily from social platforms. Explanation: This shift means that algorithmic curation, rather than editorial judgment, now shapes which issues gain public attention. Link: Consequently, understanding these algorithms is essential to understanding modern democracy.
(Transitions / Linking Words)
|---|---|
| Furthermore, / Moreover, |
| In addition, / Additionally, |
| Similarly, / Likewise, |
| What is more, | その上 |
| Nevertheless, / Nonetheless, |
| On the other hand, |
| Conversely, |
| Despite / In spite of + 名詞 | 〜にもかかわらず |
| While / Whereas(節をつなぐ) | 〜である一方 |
| Admittedly, ...
|---|---|
| Therefore, / Thus, / Hence, |
| Consequently, / As a result, |
| For this reason, |
| Accordingly, |
|---|---|
| For example, / For instance, |
| To illustrate, |
| In particular, / Specifically, | 特に |
| Namely, |
|---|---|
| In conclusion, / To conclude, |
| In summary, / To sum up, | 要約すると |
| Overall, |
| Ultimately, |
First, ... A second factor is ... Finally, ..." また文頭の "And" "But" "So" は会話的すぎるので学術文では避け、"Moreover" "However" "Therefore" を使います。
学術英語の最重要スキルの一つが hedging(ヘッジング) です。 "It is obvious that...")
|---|---|
| 助動詞 | may, might, could, can |
| 動詞 | suggest, indicate, appear, seem, tend to, imply |
| 副詞 | possibly, perhaps, arguably, presumably, generally, often |
| 形容詞 | likely, possible, probable, apparent |
| 数量 | many, some, a number of, the majority of |
It could be argued that... / The evidence suggests that... |
- ✗ This proves that exercise reduces depression.
-
✓ This suggests that exercise may reduce depression.
-
✗ Everyone knows social media is harmful.
-
✓ A growing body of research indicates that social media can have harmful effects.
-
✗ The policy will definitely solve the problem.
- ✓ The policy could help to address the problem, though further evaluation is needed.
バランス感覚: ヘッジしすぎても弱々しくなります("It might possibly perhaps be somewhat the case that...")。
Booster(逆に強める表現)
- The data clearly demonstrate a correlation between X and Y.
(Academic Register)
|---|---|
| a lot of | a significant number of / numerous |
| get | obtain / acquire / receive |
| big / huge | substantial / considerable |
| show | demonstrate / illustrate / reveal |
| find out | determine / discover / ascertain |
| look at | examine / investigate / analyze |
| think | argue / contend / maintain / posit |
| good / bad | beneficial / detrimental, favorable / adverse |
| kids | children |
| stuff / things | factors / elements / aspects |
- ✗ don't, can't, it's, isn't → ✓ do not, cannot, it is, is not
人文系では "I argue that..." だが過度な "I think / I believe / In my opinion" は主観的すぎる。"This essay argues that..." "The evidence suggests..."
- ✗ look into → ✓ investigate - ✗ bring about → ✓ cause / induce - ✗ put up with → ✓ tolerate - ✗ go up → ✓ increase / rise
- "The samples were analyzed using..."
(Citation & Plagiarism)
中立: states, notes, observes, reports, describes 解釈を含む: argues, claims, suggests, contends, maintains, asserts - According to Smith (2020), the effect is significant. - Smith (2020) argues that the effect is significant. - The effect is significant (Smith, 2020).
英語は thesis first。
(2) "There is/are" の多用
- ✗ There are many people who think that... → ✓ Many people argue that...
日本語の「〜ということ」を直訳した "The thing that I want to say is that..." I argue that..."
"It is obvious that..." "Everyone knows..." "It is a matter of course that..."
- "So" を文頭で多用(会話的)→ Therefore / Thus
- "But" を文頭で → However
- "And" を文頭で → Moreover / In addition
→ "The government should regulate the market."(一般論なら "Governments should regulate markets.")
- ✗ "Researches show..." (research は不可算)→ ✓ "Research shows..." / "Studies show..."
- ✗ "many informations" → ✓ "much information" / "many pieces of information"
- ✗ "do a mistake" → ✓ "make a mistake"
- ✗ "say an opinion" → ✓ "express / give an opinion"
such as A, B, and C" や "including A and B" を使う。
(Introduction)
[Hook] Over the past decade, the number of remote workers has tripled.
[Background] This shift, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has
reshaped how organizations operate and how employees structure their
lives.
[Thesis] While remote work presents genuine challenges for team
cohesion, its advantages in productivity, cost reduction, and
work-life balance make it a sustainable model for knowledge-based
industries—provided that organizations adapt their management
practices accordingly.
結論(Conclusion)
[Restate thesis] The evidence reviewed here indicates that remote work,
though not without its difficulties, offers substantial benefits when
properly managed.
[Synthesize] As discussed, gains in productivity and employee
satisfaction tend to outweigh the costs of reduced spontaneous
collaboration.
[Implications] Future research should examine how hybrid models can
preserve these benefits while restoring some of the informal
interaction that fully remote arrangements lack. Ultimately, the
question is not whether remote work will persist, but how organizations
can best harness it.
また "In conclusion, I think remote work is good" のような幼い締めは避ける。
